Appropriations Committee Conducts Hearings on 2012-13 Budget

The House Appropriations Committee began its series of budget hearings in February to study the governor’s proposed 2012-13 state budget.

“The Appropriations Committee is responsible for crafting the state’s annual budget. Holding budget hearings allows members of the committee to take a detailed look at the fiscal requirements of various state agencies and commissions that receive funding from the state,” said Payne.

The committee heard testimony from the Department of Revenue; state-related universities, such as Penn State, University of Pittsburgh and Temple University; the state courts; the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board; the Public Utility Commission; and the Office of Attorney General, among others.

“During the budget hearings, testifiers from the Independent Fiscal Office indicated the total revenue for the current fiscal year will be approximately $500 million below estimates,” Payne noted. “Although I’m hopeful that the economy will rebound, it’s important that when we look at this coming year’s budget, we make decisions based on the current information.”

The next step in the budget process will be the introduction of the House’s budget bill. The deadline to approve the 2012-13 budget is June 30, 2012.
